Casio SK-1 sampling keyboard
A late ’80s Casio keyboard with a nifty gimmick: digital sampling through a built-in microphone (or optional external mike or line-in), allowing you to capture sounds and play them as a voice on the keyboard. Its own instrument voices are digitally sampled as well, giving a more realistic but also more cheesy sound than my PT-100, but it has the same kitschy video-game-like percussion effects.

With all the high tech state of the art music programs out why the can’t any of them do the sampling thing! Is it so much to ask to be able to import a .Wav file and apply it to a MIDI track and have it play?
I got one these in …
I got one these in around 1986, when I was 16. It only had 1.4 seconds of sampling time at a sampling rate that was around 9 KHz, and 8 bit samples. To get more sample time, I use to play the records that I sampled at a faster speed. Then play the sample back at a lower pitch. It would sound horrible, of course. This keyboard was so much fun, though.

MAN! I am so jealous!!!! Still-in-box and you paid $1.91???? NO FAIR! I had 2 Casio Keyboards in the 80′s but THIS was the one I wanted!!!! I am trying to get one off ebay but I sure won’t be paying $2 for it! On ebay it’s back up to $90!
I made a video of …
I made a video of it that’s up on my channel. At that point I didn’t have an EPROM burner though. I built one a few months ago when I wanted to change the samples in my drum machine and used it on the SK-1 as well. Hardest part is finding where I put the DOS bootdisk for the 486 laptop that drives the burner.
I never owned one …
I never owned one of these as I was quite literaly a baby when they came out, and they would have been rather expensive when they came out, but it seems as if they were highly popular back then, it seems as if a lot of people really liked them, I don’t play keyboard, but I kind of wish I had one.
I’m not surprised …
I’m not surprised that someone has actually done that and replace the ROM chip in one of these keyboards, was it hard to do? What was the end result?

Sorry, should have said the synthesizer feature, not sampling.
I remember getting …
I remember getting the Radio Shack Concertmate version of this keyboard as a Christmas present in around 1990…the Sampling feature works like pulling out the drawbars on a Hammond organ…there are organ pipe footages above the keys and each time you press that key in the sampling set-up mode gives a stronger percentage of that harmonic to the tone.
Radio Shack sold …
Radio Shack sold various relabeled Casio keyboards as their “Concertmate” series in the ’80s and ’90s.
I remember seeing …
I remember seeing something like this, with the same “Sampling Keyboard” emblem on the right, on display at Radio Shack back in the day. Pushing one of the buttons on its control panel gave out the sound of a flushing toilet!

Hah it’s got the classic Casio/Radio shack chip in it. those sounds are very familiar to me, I got a cheap one back in 1991 and if you hit a certain combination of keys it will start playing “Happy birthday” even though it doesn’t have that officially as a demo! man those old keyboards are so much fun!

Cool! I saw a yamaha version of this at a flea market a little while ago. I was really tempted to get it, but the buttons for the sampler were busted off.

OMG! I had a friend who had one of those and we used to get it to do all kinds of crazy stuff. If you take those silly rhythm tracks and lay them down on a track and then play real instruments along with it, it is so cool! Thank for the smile.
