What you can do with LMMS and a MIDI keyboard!
This video shows what you can do (at the basic level) with the free software “LMMS” in combination with an entry-level keyboard, including synthesisers, samples (under creative commons license) and more. I am still a keyboard novice (in my opinion), but am certainly enjoying the sorts of things possible with LMMS.
The PC used to render the music is 4 years old, with average specs – AMD 3400+, 1GB RAM. I’m using XP because Ubuntu hates my keyboard.

Yup, you can use the audiofileprocessor plugin to do that. You can also export your project as a sound file and then play back that sound file as a note on your keyboard.

The samples that come with LMMS? I think they’re licensed under creative commons, meaning you can use them but need to attribute them. There’s loads of sample websites around either way.

Midi works fine …
Midi works fine with VSTi…not sure about VST. LMMS has support for VSTi. You might want to check on VST effects before you make the move.
Also, VSTi presets don’t work, so your instruments have to be created from scratch.
