On Green Dolphin Street in 7/4 – FP-4 with MIDI Keys

The MIDI file of this solo is available on my website at http://www.lot2learn.com

I recorded 2 versions of this song on the same day. One on acoustic piano here:

and this one on the Roland FP-4. Although there are definite similarities between the 2 versions, there are also distinct differences. I find it interesting to compare and contrast the two versions to see the effect each instrument has on my interpretation of this song.

Aside from the sound, the feel (action) is quite different on the FP-4 which allows me to be slightly more relaxed in my playing. The FP-4 also allows me to record to a MIDI file and superimpose the “virtual ” onto the video screen for educational purposes. This should help you dissect my playing to better understand what it is that I am doing during the improvisation.

Once again a HUGE thanks to YT user DaveBeeBoss for his incredible bass work on this tune. Make sure you listen to his great version in 7/4 here:

Hey Roger, john from the piano store here.
Too nice. Way tasty. Phrasing and ideas are interesting and well thought out. Very inspiring. Roger thanks for sharing your licks. Keeps me plunking even though I will never reach your level. I’m working on the Metheny tune now.

Thanks much. Your comment is greatly appreciated. A good deal of credit has to go to that terrific backing track provided by You Tube user davebeeboss which provided the inspiration for my performance.

I’m speechless. I don’t think I can flow like that on any tune in 4, let alone 7….

    This performance is …
This performance is an undiscovered masterpiece. The playing is phenomenally PRECISE – but then on top that has a complex tempo and played with speed too. I started to list the great runs in this posting but there are just too many.

I’ve already begun sharing this link with others. It deserves it.

    I’ve been studying …
I’ve been studying jazz piano, guitar, and sax for about a year now. I just wanted to say thank you lot2learn for inspiring me to never stop playing. It is people like you and 7notemode that have truly blessed my life with amazing lessons and videos. All I can hope is that one day I will be able to pass on what I learn to others in my current situation.

Did you also create a sheet music file of this? It’s already great that you put the MIDI keyboard above, but it’s a little too fast to keep track of all the notes:P

I love your style, man! I can hear Herbie Hancock and McCoy Tyner…and possibly Cuban great Chucho Valdes. Are you into Ritchie Beirach and Aydin Esen? You would like those guys a lot.

    Thanks Dave – it …
Thanks Dave – it must be some weird YT thing. I uploaded this a day or 2 after I did the acoustic version but kept it private for about 2 or 3 weeks and then released it to the public. Those few weeks in the “private holding tank” must trigger something in YT and when it is released as public none of the subscribers are notified. That’s all I can figure???? It also must rank it differently in searches. Oh well, I learned not to do that again. ;-)

Can’t wait to hear Wave in 15/8!

I must have missed this one, interesting to see another approach. Great playing as usual, you manage 7 with ease.
I’ve been working on Wave in 15/8 !
I wonder why your other version has thousands more views?
