Permanently circuit-bent keyboard (YAMAHA PSR-185)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
I was playing around with the inside of this keyboard for the second time, but my brother was with me this time.

I had just been messing with the sound before, but there was a big inside which was very hot (some kind of main processor?), which we couldn’t resist probing with wires. Anyway, the result was very worrying – I thought I had permanently broken it at first. The display just did some crazy crap when you turned it on. But after a few hours of no power it returned to working state – well, ALMOST working, like this. ;)

The sounds in the sound chip are stored next to each other one after the other, and we seem to have PERMANENTLY overwritten the positions in the chip which it thinks some sounds start at, so we get insane bits of random different sounds coming out together. (I’m lucky it even does ANYTHING. XD)

The headphone output is connected to Line Input on my computer, that’s why it’s easier to hear than my my previous circuit-bending video.

There is hope, I think you improved it. Compose a song and upload.

    I remember this …
I remember this keyboard very well. The owner of the store where I took music lessons at, Sandra Clay taught mgave me a lesson on one of these.

    theres rubber pads …
theres rubber pads under neath the keys if yout ake the whole thing apart you will be able to take the rubber pads out and you will notice they are stuck in just pop it out and you will notice the rubber is cracked thats the reason they are sticking or not making contact with the board

    Sorry, I don’t know …
Sorry, I don’t know anything about this. If it’s still within the warranty period, I’d suggest taking it back to the place you got it from and demanding a refund or replacement, or searching the Internet for your nearest Yamaha repair centre.

    do you know …
do you know anything about fixing dead keys?i have one with 3 keys that are out.

  • SomethingUnreal:

    I have no idea – …
I have no idea – I’ve never even seen it, let alone used it. To be honest, I’m not really the person who should be recommending a keyboard to you, since I’ve only ever really had two – this, and the PSR-E313 which I have now. Judging that the 190 is a later model, I would assume that it’s better, but I really have no idea, and I’d recommend talking to a Yamaha representitive, or just anyone who’s more in the know than me (which is most people, xD).

    Is the psr-190 any …
    Is the psr-190 any better?

  • SomethingUnreal:

    I guess so, but I …
I guess so, but I wouldn’t really recommend this keyboard if you intend to play some realistic-sounding piano music on it, since it doesn’t sound as realistic as newer ones (its keys aren’t even touch-sensitive)

  • eleanizzle:

    Can this keyboard …
Can this keyboard sound like a piano or not?

  • eleanizzle:

    Is 20 pounds a good …
Is 20 pounds a good price to pay?

  • SomethingUnreal:

    Well, this is quite …
Well, this is quite an old keyboard nowadays, and there are other Yamaha ones which are capable of sounding much more like a real piano while not being too expensive. Look out for something called “Portable Grand” (I believe it’s called), which is an instrument Yamaha are including on most of their new (and not so new) keyboards. This old keyboard (PSR-185) doesn’t have it, but the keyboard I have now, which you can see in my newer videos (PSR-E313) has it.

  • eleanizzle:

    I mean would you …
I mean would you recommend this model of yamaha to a beginner, not the trick

  • eleanizzle:

    Would you recommend …
Would you recommend this to a beginner?

  • SomethingUnreal:

    @panjr0809: Well, …
@panjr0809: Well, it was nearly 2 years since I made this video, and I don’t have the keyboard anymore. =p
But no, that didn’t ever happen to me. If the display turns on then I’d suggest taking it to a repair shop. If it doesn’t, maybe it’s just the power supply which burnt out and you could get another. Sorry I can’t be of more use.

  • panjr0809:

hey i dnt no if …
hey i dnt no if this ever happened to you but i happen to have the same keyboard and all of a sudden the sound literally got cut out,now wen i press a key no sound comes out :( HELP!!!!!

    you simply crashed that keyboard…

  • Tyler11440:

    ok i broke it :(
    ok i broke it :(

  • Tyler11440:

    ok guess what i …
ok guess what i used the ac, i bent a couple resistors and it started making a demonic roaring sound (it was supposed to be playing the default drum sequence) and i almost pooped myself. its not working right now so i have to wait for it to unbreak itself and i will go back to bending it. strange how they need time and they fix themselves

  • SomethingUnreal:

    Well, that would …
Well, that would probably work, but you’d need quite a few pieces of tape.

  • Tyler11440:

what if i use tape …
what if i use tape to hold it in?

  • SomethingUnreal:

    @Tyler11440: Its …
@Tyler11440: Its power adaptor actually only gives off 11.5V (DC) at 700mA, so in this case it’s quite safe to bend. Running it on batteries would only reduce the voltage by 2.5V, and it’s hard to get batteries to not fall out while the keyboard’s open. I wonder what Yamaha were thinking when they designed that. ;P

  • Carrie Laco:

Yeah, my husband made the mistake of “playing around” inside my Yamaha keyboard too. Never again.

He was not so lucky (in more ways than one, if you get my drift). LOL.
